A1 in Northumberland

Proposals to improve the A1 in Northumberland by providing additional road capacity and enabling greater access to and from Northumberland.

Progress report

We recently concluded a public consultation on the options for the scheme which ran from 14 November to 23 December.

We would like to thank you for your participation in this consultation.

Feedback received at the events, along with safety, economic and environmental analysis, will inform the decision on the option to be taken forward. We have been working closely with Northumberland County Council and other local parties as we develop improvement proposals for the scheme.

We’ve also established a working group of local road users and interest groups to ensure the development makes best use of local knowledge. Environmental surveys are currently ongoing and we thank all landowners for their help, assistance and patience whilst these continue.

What next?

We will be analysing all the results from the consultation to feed into the recommendations for the preferred route in spring/summer 2017. We will then begin more detailed design work and progress the scheme’s planning application ahead of starting work on the north of Ellingham improvements in 2018.

Timeline

  • announced in the Road Investment Strategy: 2014
  • public exhibitions: May 2016
  • have your say: autumn/winter 2016
  • recommendations on the preferred route for the A1 Morpeth to Ellingham dualling: spring/summer 2017
  • start construction of some of the A1 improvements north of Ellingham in advance of the dualling scheme: 2018
  • begin upgrade to dual carriageway between Morpeth and Felton and Alnwick and Ellingham: 2020 TBC

Why we need this scheme

The A1 in Northumberland is an important route between England and Scotland, especially for long distance travel along the eastern side of the country. The route between Morpeth to Felton and Alnwick to Ellingham is currently a single carriageway. This stretch of road needs improving because journey times are generally slow – it can be hard to overtake, leading to some drivers overtaking unsafely. There are limited alternative routes making it difficult to provide alternative routes if the A1 requires maintenance or if there are any unplanned events on the road.

The scheme in detail

We propose to improve the A1 in Northumberland by providing additional road capacity and enabling greater access to and from Northumberland. Our improvement programme includes:
  • A1 Morpeth to Ellingham – we’ll upgrade the existing single carriageway to dual carriageway between Morpeth and Felton and Alnwick and Ellingham creating a continuous, high-quality dual carriageway from Newcastle to Ellingham
  • A1 north of Ellingham – we’ll enhance the performance and safety of this section of road, including overtaking opportunities, junction improvements and improved crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Further detail about the proposals for the improvements can be found on our consultation page, which provides the plans presented at the recent consultation events. Please note these are subject to change as we progress the design further and review feedback received at the events.

Aims

The anticipated benefits of the scheme are:
  • improved journey times and journey time reliability
  • safety improvements
  • enable economic growth in Northumberland
  • creation of a continuous dual carriageway standard from Newcastle to Ellingham
