Progress report

Looking for the current improvement works at this same location? View the M62 Junction 26 Chain Bar Improvement. We have been conducting a range of surveys and assessment work as follows:
  • plant and animal lifestyle and habitat (March/April 2016)
  • presence of Great Crested Newts (April 2016) - none found
  • national vegetation classification (May 2016) - to produce a classification and description of the plant communities of Britain; we focused on the ancient woodland section so we could classify types of woodland and determine how ecologically important they are
  • ancient woodland tree and shrub populations (June 2016)
  • presence of bat roosts (May to August 2016)
This information will help us fully consider the habitats found in this area. This allows us to more carefully assess possible design options for this scheme. We are also beginning discussions with experts and organisations so we can take into account their views on the options we identify.

What next?

Once we’ve worked up viable options, we’ll tell you about them and ask for your opinion. We hope to do this in early 2017. You can sign up for our email alerts to stay informed.

Why we need this scheme

People travelling around the Chain Bar Interchange area experience severe delays when travelling between Leeds and Bradford on the M62 and M606. The growth expected in housing and businesses for this region will mean more vehicles are on these roads. As such we predict that these issues will only increase in the future if we do not act.

Aims

We’re designing this improvement project to deliver greater benefits for road users and local communities, and to support the region’s economy. Once completed it will:
  • reduce queuing times at the interchange
  • make journeys safer by improving the standard and capacity of the road, which will reduce the risk of accidents
  • support economic growth by providing additional road capacity and allowing the opportunity to release additional land for development
