M57/M58 Switch IslandRecently updated

Improvements to the junction and safety at Switch Island, near Aintree in Liverpool.

Region:  North West
Start date:  5 February 2018
Cost:  ¬£3 million approx
Status:  CURRENT
Type:  Improvement Scheme
End date:  January 2019
Programme:

Progress report

A site compound is being constructed in January 2018 in preparation for construction, which will begin in February 2018. The first phase of work will include the construction of a cycle route on the A59 Northway, between Brooms Cross Road and Liverpool Road South.

What's next

In March, foundation works for the new gantry will start on the M57 - the gantry itself will not be installed until June 2018. From March to the end of the scheme, we will be constructing new high mast signals (including the foundations), installing 'intelligent cats eyes', and improving surfacing and road markings. Each of these phases will take place on a number of locations at Switch Island at the same time, so long as there is no clash in traffic management and diversion routes.

Other works include installation of signage and new lighting columns on the A59 Northway.

Why we need this scheme

This is a key route that accesses a number of amenities, as well as local employers such as the Port of Liverpool. Successive improvements to the roundabout mean it now has multiple arms. The most recent improvements have been the addition of a direct link from Switch Island to the A595 which bypasses the village of Thornton. The roundabout has a poor safety record with a high accident rate.

Aims

The primary aim is to improve safety for road users by encouraging them to reduce speeds and improve their lane discipline. This will be achieved by installing various signs, a new gantry and by improved road markings.

Improvements will include:

  • construction of a new motorway gantry
  • installation of high-mast traffic signals
  • improvements to cycle facilities
  • installation of ‚Äėintelligent cats eyes‚Äô - which light up in response to changing traffic lights
  • improvements to the road layout
  • carriageway surfacing
