Progress report

We’ve gathered your feedback on our 3 proposed route options. In light of the feedback received we now need to combine this with further technical assessment to help us identify the route that provides the best overall solution for the scheme.

What next?

Once we have completed our further assessment works we will make an announcement about the preferred route. We hope to make this shortly. We will publish a Public Consultation Report at the same time, which will outline your feedback together with a Scheme Assessment Report which will explain the factors that determined the choice of the preferred route. During the next stage of the project our team will work up the design of the preferred route in more detail. The preliminary design will include details on the proposed junctions, landscaping and bridges. We will hold further consultation as the design progresses to get your feedback to help refine the developing design. We will be engaging the local authority to help shape the consultation so that local people get to have their say. Once the preliminary design has been completed a draft Development Consent Order and Environmental Statement will be prepared, leading to the submission of the formal planning application to the Planning Inspectorate (PINS). A Public Examination will be held before a Commissioner appointed by PINS.

Why we need this scheme

The existing A460 and A449 suffer significant congestion and high accident rates due to large traffic volumes and the proportion of Heavy Goods Vehicles using these roads. Currently, traffic on the M54 wanting to travel north is directed off the M54 at junction 2 onto the A449 and A5 to join the M6 at junction 12 to continue north. There is no signed route on the M54 to the M6 Toll. Traffic heading for the M6 Toll leaves the motorway at junction 1 and uses the A460, past the villages of Featherstone and Shareshill, then crosses over the M6 through junction 11 to join the M6 Toll at junction T8. Traffic wishing to travel north can join the M6 at junction 11. Long distance motorway traffic having to divert off onto less suitable roads to continue their motorway journey causes delays, congestion and safety issues.

Aims

The aims of this scheme are to:
  • relieve traffic congestion on the A460, A449 and A5 providing more reliable journey times
  • improve safety and reduce driver stress; keeping the right traffic on the right roads, separating local and community traffic from long distance and business traffic
  • reduce volumes of through-traffic in villages, particularly heavy goods vehicles, improving local community access across the busy road
  • create a better traffic flow and improved routes for east-west and north-south traffic, supporting local economic growth for Telford, Shresbury, Wolverhampton, Cannock and Tamworth
  • provide good value for money
  • provide appropriate mitigation to offset any detrimental environmental effects
