Following the installation of the traffic management, the focus has been on removing the old life-expired central reservation barrier. It has now all been successfully taken away and work has been carried out to clear the accumulated debris from the central reserve. New weepholes have also been drilled in the bridge deck to help with drainage along the viaduct.
We are now working to remove covers and install steel plates to 49 manholes and inspection chambers. Once this is done we will have a flat surface on which the new concrete central barrier can be placed.

We’re about to move into a new phase of work (installing the replacement barrier), which means the traffic management will change. From the beginning of May, we will be working between junction 1 (Hambrook) and junction 3 (Bristol City Centre). A fully signed diversion will be in place when the road is closed overnight
Why we need this scheme
The old central reservation barrier on elevated section of the M32 was installed when the Eastville Viaduct was built in the 1970s. Inspections have shown that this has now reached the end of its serviceable life and needs to be completely replaced.
The scheme in detail
We need to replace the old, life-expired, central reservation barrier on the elevated section of the M32.
Due to the nature of the location, the work is logistically challenging. All the work will be completed overnight so the road can remain open during the daytime.
When we are working we will need to completely close sections of the carriageway to provide a safe working space for our contractors and machinery.
We will be working in phases to minimise the disruption to road users.Enabling works
This first part of the scheme will require a number of Overnight closures affecting the north and southbound carriageways – some between junctions 1 (Hambrook) and 3 (Bristol City Centre) and others between junctions 2 (Fishponds) and 3 (Bristol City Centre).Phase 1
We will be working between junction 1 (Hambrook) and junction 2 (Fishponds), with the southbound carriageway closed to all us space to work. The whole section (from Junction 1) needs to be closed because the elevated section of the M32 begins just before the southbound junction 2 exit slip road. A fully signed diversion will be in place when the road is closed. Occasional overnight northbound closures will also be required.Phase 2
We will be working between junction 2 (Fishponds) and junction 3 (Bristol City Centre). A fully signed diversion will be in place when the road is closed. Occasional full overnight closures of both the north and southbound carriageways between junctions 1 (Hambrook) and 3 (Bristol City Centre) will be required too.
The nature of the work means that it will be noisy. Care will be taken not to disturb local residents too much, with the nosiest parts of the jobs done during the first part of the night (to be finished by midnight at the latest).
