M3 junction 9 improvements

Major improvements to the M3 junction 9 to allow free movement between the A34 and M3.

Progress report

We are currently conducting a range of surveys to give us information about traffic volumes and the local environment. This information will help us explore different design options that would meet the aims we have for the scheme. We are beginning discussions with local authorities and technical stakeholders so we can take into account their views.

What next?

Once we’ve worked up viable options, we’ll tell you about them and ask for your opinion. We hope to do this in 2017. You can sign up for our email alerts to stay informed.

Why we need this scheme

The M3 junction 9 (also known as the Winnall roundabout) improvements are needed to reduce congestion in the area. The level of freight traffic is increasing due to the expansion of the Port of Southampton and there are planned residential developments in the Winchester area which this scheme will cater for. The junction connects South Hampshire and the wider region with London and the North and Midlands. It is considered a critical area to economic growth at a local, regional and national level.

Aims

This scheme will aim to:
  • reduce traffic congestion and delays
  • improve safety
  • improve connections for cyclists and pedestrians
