In November and December 2016, we held a public consultation to gather feedback on proposed plans to improve the M271 A35 Redbridge roundabout.
During this period we distributed brochures and questionnaires to local residents, businesses and organisations asking you to get involved. Two exhibitions were held showcasing our proposal and information was made available on the Highways England website.
All comments from the public consultation have now been analysed and we would like to thank everyone who provided their feedback and attended the exhibition.
We can now announce the final details of our preferred route which showcase the improved modifications that have been made to the option presented, based on the responses.
You can read our executive summary which provides information on the preferred route, including a map to show what it will look like. If you would like to find out further information on the feedback we received then you can read the Public Consultation report. See below the following documents for further reading:

We are now working with our consultants and the local authority to produce the detailed design. In addition to this, we are currently assessing the significant programme of improvement works to be delivered by Highways England in Southampton to ensure we minimise the disruption to the travelling public, affected communities and businesses.

Why we need this schemeCongestion is a real problem in this area. The M271 southbound to the A33 has average speeds of below 40 mph during peak hours. This also impacts road safety.
AimsThis scheme will:
- reduce traffic delays on this important route into Southampton
- create more reliable journey times for local, regional and port transport
