M1 Junctions 19 to 16 All Lane RunningRecently updated

Reducing congestion on the M1 by making it a smart motorway between junctions 19 and 16.

Region:  East Midlands
Start date:  Nov 2015
Cost:  ¬£94.1m
Status:  CURRENT
Type:  Major Scheme
End date:  by the end of December 2017
Programme:  Smart Motorways

Progress report

We have now completed the construction and technology work between junctions 16 and 18.

On the morning of 22 November 2017, the motorway was opened to traffic at speeds of up to 70mph with an additional lane in each direction between junctions 16 and 18.

We have also:

  • completed installation of telecommunications cables which will control the overhead signals between junctions 18 and 19, allowing us to prepare this section for opening
  • completed the surfacing of all lanes between junctions 16 and 18 on the northbound and southbound carriageway
  • installed a new steel barrier between junctions 16 and 19
  • completed the new street lighting at Watford Gap Service Station, which will increase visibility for customers entering and leaving the services

What next?

Over the coming weeks, we will be undertaking the following work ahead of opening up the final phase of the scheme:

  • continuing the construction of the remaining emergency areas between junctions 18 and 19
  • testing and commissioning the technology between junctions 18 and 19
  • continuing the installation of verge signs, road lighting and CCTV throughout the project
  • strengthening the hard shoulder (the new lane 1) to reinforce the road for increased traffic flows between junctions 18 and 19
  • continuing to renew the surfacing of all lanes between junction 18 and 19
  • landscaping within the verges

Why we need this scheme

The M1 is:

  • a strategic route for local, regional and international traffic
  • a direct motorway route between north and south
  • a major route connecting major conurbations
The M1 between junctions 19 and 16 is part of the link between the M1 and M6 at Catthorpe Interchange. It currently carries more traffic than it was designed to carry, resulting in congestion and delays.

Aims

This scheme will:
  • relieve congestion
  • smooth the flow of the traffic
  • improve safety
  • improve journey times
  • support economic development in the region
