Progress report

We have put together our proposed options for each of the 6 A47 schemes and now want to hear your views. This is your chance to view, discuss and help shape our proposals.

All 6 consultations run from 13 March 2017 till 11:59pm on 21 April 2017:

We will continue to survey the areas along the route to inform shape our design. We will also continue to engage engagement with local authorities and stakeholders as we progress with each scheme including:

  • A47 Alliance
  • Suffolk County Council
  • Peterborough City Council
  • Cambridgeshire County Council
  • Norfolk County Council
  • Members of Parliament in Westminster
  • Road Haulage Association and Freight Transport Association

This will help us to develop the most suitable options for the area.

What next?

Once we have developed the options for the scheme we will announce our preferred route. We hope to do this in mid 2017.

Date Event
October 2014  Initial feasibility study by the DfT
December 2014   Scheme included as part of the Roads Investment Strategy
March to December 2015 Advanced feasibility study
December 2015 to December 2016 Development of options
Mid 2017 Preferred route announcement
Mid 2018 Start of statutory process
2020 Start of works

Why we need this scheme

The A47 has a number of congestion hotspots around Norwich, Peterborough and Great Yarmouth. There is also significant growth predicted in the area which our proposed improvements will help to support.

The scheme in detail

We are proposing 6 locations along the route for improvements. These are:

You can view a route map outlining the six schemes. These proposals are part of the Roads Investment Strategy announced in 2014.

This scheme will:
  • support economic growth in the Peterborough, Norwich and Great Yarmouth areas
  • improve safety performance - contributing to a 40% reduction in accidents across Highways England’s roads over the next five years
  • improve accessibility to the region
  • reduce congestion
