We completed our preparation works in July 2016. There were lots of important services around the junction that had to be moved before we could begin:
- Western Power - electricity cables
- BT - fibre optic cables
- Severn Trent - water mains
- National Grid Gas – gas mains
- T mobile - mobile phone masts
What next?We will continue with the main construction work. We are keeping disturbance for residents to a minimum by working overnight from 8am until 8pm. To reduce the impact of our works we have kept all lanes open on the A43 but narrowed them to allow room for the road works. On Brackley Road and Abthorpe Road only one lane will be open overnight while we are working. We will need to put in place some overnight closures later in the scheme to resurface the carriageway. We will advise you in good time before these happen.
|Preparatory works||Jan 2016|
|Main construction starts||1 August 2016|
|Scheme complete||April 2017|
Why we need this schemeOnce the A43/A5 Towcester roundabout is completed there will be an increase in traffic from the southbound to the Abthorpe roundabout. This will lead to queuing and congestion. We also recognise the increase in general traffic levels from local housing/business growth. These works will also help open up opportunities for local development.
The scheme in detailWe will widen the A43 Abthorpe roundabout. This will allow us to create a larger roundabout controlled by traffic signals. It will include 3 through lanes on both A43(T) approaches, an additional lane on the northern circulatory and a substantially longer 3rd lane on Brackley Road. We also propose a separate 4th lane on the northbound A43(T) for road users turning right. This means that during busy periods, traffic going in this direction can be safely queued on the roundabout without blocking through traffic. 3D model picture shows how the junction will look once the work is completed.
AimsThis scheme will:
- reduce congestion and improve journey times
- improve safety
- allow local development and growth to take place
In order to begin main construction works we had to carry out some major vegetation clearance around the vicinity of the A43/Brackley Road/Abthorpe Road junction. We don’t like to remove trees and vegetation but this work was necessary to allow us to widen the carriageway and install measures to reduce noise. We plan to plant additional trees in areas as part of the final works phase. These will take time to mature. We carried out this work in February/March 2016. This was so we could avoid potential harm to nesting birds. We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and do we all we can to protect animals and wildlife. The clearance works were short term. We had to put in place some limited off peak lane closures so that our workers were safe while they worked. We didn't carry out any of this work at night to minimise disturbance to those living in close proximity to the junction.
